A Halfling, a Gnome, and an Orc are running away from the city guard in Port Blacksand when they come to a thick wood on the outskirts of the city. They each decide to hide by climbing a tree.

When the Troll Guardsmen arrive, they go to the first tree where the Halfling is hiding and shout, "We know you're up there, come down!"
The Halfling, thinking fast, says, "Tweet, tweet, tweet!"

The Guardsmen, thinking that it's a bird, move on to the next tree where the Gnome is hiding and once again shout, "We know you're up there, come down!"
The Gnome, thinking fast, says, "Whoo, whoo, whoo!"

The Guardsmen, thinking that it's an owl, move on to the next tree where the Orc is hiding and once again shout, "We know you're up there, come down!"
The Orc thinks for a while and then says, "Moo, moo, moo..."

Rumors of a new Archmage rising to power in the Old World continue to circulate across the Western Ocean...

THE BRIAKEN WOES by David Irwin

In the land of Allansia, evil manifests itself in many foul ways, but it is a rarity to find such as malevolent force as the Briaken Woes. Residing deep in Darkwood Forest are these frightful tree spirits. Legend of how such an evil force could be spawned, is now known only to a few and written in the most ancient runes of the Wood Elves. It s said a powerful black mage infiltrated in fair form a clan of dryads and began to seduce and corrupt them to his evil ways, subtly secreting his venom into their midst. He persuaded them to walk abroad from their secret glade and from then on many were doomed. Their spirits were forced to abandon their forms and sought sanctuary in other places. Those pure and true entered the trees of the forest and so became benign guardians, the Treemen. But many were too exultant with their new freedom and, as the sun rose and kindled the trees in its radiant effulgence, they were stricken with acute pain and these were forced to seek refuge in the forest debris.

From that day on they were dammed, thralls to the dark powers and cursed to forever wander in their hideous form in eternal pain. Briaken Woes are a terror to behold and none dare violate their homes deep in the darkest recesses of the forest. They have eyes that burn as if hot coals in a hellish inferno and these can induce paralysis. Those who succumb to their piercing gaze are often at the mercy of the sharp, thorned talons and shall never be seen again. Briaken Woes know little of fear and it is said they will only recoil before those who brandish flame. They are most active on the night of the summer solstice when they gather to whisper in their hollow tongue ancient incantations. Briaken Woes can actually be created by a powerful sorcerer in a similar fashion to a Golem and by cutting several boughs from a dammed gallow tree and infusing them with magic from a black grimoire, a Woes will rise up. Mercifully, few know this ritual.
